This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 17, I will have the honor of moderating a panel discussion called "Open Doors and Open Minds: The Intersection of Race, Gender and Class in Service” at Emory University’s Glenn Memorial Methodist Church at 7pm. This event is part of Emory’s MLK Week observances and will feature Renelda Mack, Founder of Emory Cares Day, Young Hughley, CEO of Resources for Residents and Community and Angelou Ezeilo, Founder and Director of Greening Youth. Emory student a cappella groups will perform prior to the discussion.
Part of the legacy we will celebrate on MLK Day is that of young activists, so it’s worth noting that this event was conceptualized and implemented by students. The panel represents part of the University’s commitment to provide students with opportunities to lead and organize as part of their undergraduate experience. This is a vital effort among all of our educational institutions. If we are to sustain and advance progress we have to empower the next generation. The students have done a great job and I hope we can reward them with an impressive turn out for a meaningful discussion that will enrich our understanding and encourage their community engagement in honor of Dr. King.
