  • Courage to Dissent Author Visiting Atlanta

On Saturday, February 26 Atlanta has the privilege of hearing from Tomiko Brown-Nagin whose recent book Courage to Dissent: Atlanta and the Long History of the Civil Rights Movement is receiving acclaim.  The book highlights under-explored tensions within the Civil Rights Movement about the best strategies to achieve change.  Brown-Nagin explores differences among dissenters and the lawyers tasked with their release and freedom, among generations and classes, and as always in social movements, those who advocate for direct action and those who believe in systemic change over time.    She also does a nice job of documenting contributions from attorneys and neighborhood heroes in Atlanta who, acting humbly out of duty, changed the world in dramatic ways.  The lecture and book signing will be at the Atlanta History Center.  Tickets are $5 for History Center members, $10 for the general public and must be reserved in advance, here.

Brown-Nagin is the Justice Thurgood Marshall Distinguished Professor of History and Law at the University of Virginia, and, as a graduate of Furman University, has deep roots in the South.  Her book tour has other locations and dates beyond Atlanta. For a full list, more information about her and the book, visit her faculty profile here.
