(Shout out to Ellen for pulling this post together! Thx)
So now that we’ve hired an architectural team ( Freelon/ HOK) we took CCHR staff, architects, exhibit designers, and project managers recently to San Francisco where we got a behind-the-scenes look at four museums. We were very lucky to get a chance to meet key staff (thanks!) at each of these institutions where they shared good ideas, wishes, advice and a look at fun stuff like how back-of-house operations affect exhibit, performance, and event spaces (think air ducts and loading docks).

There were several great elements at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art ( SFMOMA). The team was impressed by the auditorium-- although it can hold a large audience of about 250, it retained an intimate feel due to its design and ability to concentrate a smaller audience into one area. They also have a great event space layout… very instructive.

We then visited the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), which was designed by CCHR’s architect, Philip Freelon. From the street, a 3-story tall image of a child can be seen through the glass exterior wall, though this image is made up of a composite of photographs of descendants of the diaspora (including one of Phil Freelon with bad hair). Great interaction with the street.

The latest technology is used throughout the highly interactive exhibits at Zeum, a children’s museum that focuses on animation, film production, and music. This picture is of their video studio which allows groups to record musical performance.
The architecture of the de Young Museum, designed by Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron, blew us away. Natural light filled this art museum, even in what normally would have been interior spaces in the center of the structure. Skylights and cut-outs in the building added dimension and intrigue to the space. Steps also form a great interior sitting space—we are thinking about the courtyard steps for CCHR.
