Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr. Collection

Through the efforts of a group of prominent Atlantans, a 10,000-piece collection of materials includes handwritten notes and unpublished sermons of Martin Luther King Jr. ’48 narrowly avoided the auction block and will now make its home at Morehouse College, alma mater of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.  The National Center for Civil and Human Rights purchased the exhibition rights for the Collection in 2009 and will feature portions prominently in the completed facility.

Without Sanctuary

Searching through America's past for the last 25 years, collector James Allen uncovered an extraordinary visual legacy: photographs and postcards taken as souvenirs at lynchings throughout America.  In 2009 the Center had an opportunity to secure the collection, capturing their instructive power for display in the completed facility, and keeping the collection’s home in the American South.  Since that time interest in the collection has grown and Without Sanctuary has been exhibited in part in Cincinnati, OH, Arles, France and London, England.

Benny Andrews’ John Lewis Collection

Benny Andrews was a Georgia born artist who became famous for his folk art style and socially aware topics.  His series on John Lewis' life shows the important moments before and during his civil rights work.  The series shows a young John writing a letter to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., marching in Selma, AL and leaving the hospital after receiving a concussion.  The scenes are moving, personal and very engaging due to the medium used.
